The City with Eyes

Don’t be surprised if you feel like you’re being watched while you wander the streets and squares of Sibiu in Transylvania. Known as The City with Eyes, many of the historic city’s buildings have anthropomorphic air vents in the attics, which appear to be keeping a watchful eye on passers-by. According to local folklore the houses were designed to resemble the all-seeing eye, on the lookout for any wrongdoings. In the winter of 2017, the Sibiu eyes become a symbol of protest in Romania, used to great effect in an anti-corruption campaign with the slogan “Vă vedem”– “We see you.”
